"Kabet" Chattakan Vongsiri, one of the pioneering artists of BGC Glass Studio, was among the few who chose to pursue the path of glass art at a time when Thailand had not a single glassblowing artist. His deep fascination with this alluring and challenging material became the driving force that led him to become a key figure in the movement for contemporary glass art in Thailand. In 2017, after studying glassblowing techniques from the first international artists to teach in Thailand—Jeremy Popelka and Stephanie Tranchard—Chattakan began his practice by focusing on basic forms. This was a means to develop the skills and precision needed to control the volatile and delicate nature of hot glass. He held a clear goal in mind: to create forms that were distinctly different from the utilitarian vessels that had been reproduced for centuries. With a background in sculpture from his undergraduate years, Chattakan’s artistic journey began with experimentation. He questioned conventional forms and pushed the creative limits of glass as a material. He chose to sculpt glass while it was still hot, carefully layering it by hand—piece by piece—shaping it gradually with steadfast intent, determined to guide the molten material in alignment with his imagination.
